JUDI SPIERS BECOMES PATRON OF DPHT AND LAUNCHES “PONIES INSPIRING PEOPLE” PROJECT AT OCCOMBE FARM
Photo shows: Judi Spiers, with Clare Milne of the Clare Milne Trust and Jamie the Dartmoor Heritage pony, demonstrating how special the relationship between pony and person can be.

Judi Spiers, well known Presenter for BBC Radio Devon and a strong supporter of ‘all things Devon’ has agreed to become a Patron for the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT), to help raise awareness of the fact that the original Dartmoor pony is at risk.
Judi recognises the importance of the work being done by the DPHT and the fact that the Occombe PIP project is a perfect way of demonstrating just how good the ponies are: “Until now, I had no idea of the problems faced by one of Devon’s most powerful symbols, the Dartmoor pony. The DPHT’s aim is to raise awareness of the Dartmoor breed and add value to the ponies that come off the Moor. The PIP project enables us to show the ponies’ trainability, wonderful temperament and suitability for all the family. By handling and teaching these ponies how to behave, we give them real value and a chance to find a home. In turn, therefore, we are helping to preserve their future. The work being done within the PIP project offers a whole new series of beneficial experiences for all those involved. An extraordinary rapport is achieved between these Dartmoor ponies and the adults and children who come to spend time with them. What a motivational influence the ponies are. Everyone should come to Occombe to be inspired by the ponies!”

The Wag From Widecombe becomes new DPHT Patron
You can imagine how delighted we were when Tony Beard, otherwise known as the Wag From Widecombe, agreed to be a Patron. Tony is a keen preserver of Devon life and culture. Tony has spent many happy years as a farmer. He talks of his love of the moors, countryside traditions and the characters who live and work on the moor in his Radio Devon 'Dartmoor Diary'.
The Dartmoor Pony is the emblem of Dartmoor, but then some would say Tony is!

TV Celebrity Presenter Matt Baker has just accepted the role of Patron of the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust. Matt is best known for his long association with Blue Peter and gained further fame in the popular “Only Fools On Horses”.
Earlier this Summer Matt came to Dartmoor to work with the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust for BBC 1’s “Countryfile Summer Diaries”. Matt was so taken with his “charge” Fern; a yearling Dartmoor filly, that he even wanted to take her home to Durham with him after his handling experience.
We are over the moon to have such a well loved presenter as a patron of our trust who genuinely embraces our ethos. "Saving Dartmoor Ponies Through Innovative Education."

Johnny Kingom takes on the role of DPHT Patron following his Dartmoor Pony Experience.
Earlier this summer Johnny came down to Dartmoor filming for his new 10 part series on BBC2. We trained Johnny how to tame a completely wild filly, a difficult task, but imagine how we felt when we heard he was scared of horses. Well the sessions went brilliantly, Johnny worked with Dru and Vanessa, it was pretty emotional stuff watching Johnny tame the filly, he has a genuine love of animals that shines through. We hope you enjoy his new series and we will post the date of the filly taming when confirmed.
