Conservation grazing progress

A little extract from notes made during a recent visit to see the ponies working on our conservation grazing research site at Bellever:
“It is really interesting to  observe how many new plants are starting to emerge through the molinia. It is at its most lush, but you can now see the benefits of previous trampling and the many routes the ponies have taken breaking the thick tussocks down.  All the fresh dung on the site is further evidence of their return even without any incentive for them - this is purely from their memory.  Find it really fascinating that they have such a huge area to roam, but they are drawn to the molinia, they were really tucking into it. But moving all the time, literally walking scrub cutters, amazing for habitat management. Just imagine what this is proving for the Bellever ecosystem and then take this to the wider context of pony grazing  supporting biodiversity.”
