John French and Kerry Smith -
Mitchelcombe Farm

Herd Information

The French family have been farming in Mitchelcombe since the 1870's. In the heyday of the farm the family ran a large herd of over 250 Dartmoor ponies on Holne common. Today a small herd of 25 traditional type Dartmoor ponies are managed by John French and his business partner Kerry Smith. They are carefully chosen for hardiness, confirmation and temperament ensuring that the offspring of this tough, semi-feral herd will be suitable to train with a view to selling them as wonderful family ponies.

All of the ponies at Mitchelcombe Farm receive the best start in life, being brought on very slowly and patiently from weaning and benefiting greatly from 15 years experience in Natural Horsemanship methods which has worked so well on the hundreds of wild foals we have trained. Our ponies are well known for their good nature and their confidence in all they encounter.

More than just a business, we believe passionately in helping to keep these valuable herds on Dartmoor for future generations to enjoy. We take great pride in producing strong, good looking and most importantly SAFE family ponies and therefore finding the most suitable home is of paramount importance. We have built up many happy customers over the years and many have returned to buy from us again. We receive many heartwarming tales of happy ponies and doting new owners which makes all our efforts worthwhile!"
