What we do

SUPPORT DARTMOOR HILL FARMERS IN KEEPING DARTMOOR PONY HERDS ON THE COMMONS OF DARTMOOR

DPHT is committed to adding value to Dartmoor ponies as a way of ensuring the pony keepers have a secure and long-term marketplace. We provide a free handling service, castrations for colts and vasectomies for stallions. We run a Sales List and offer grants to assist with herd management to help improve the sustainability of pony keeping.

EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING

Since 2009 the DPHT has worked with students with special needs and behaviour issues, using the Dartmoor Pony as a platform for learning and developing life skills. The programmes are tailored to individual needs and allow participants to interact with a sensitive animal, creating a bond and gaining confidence to deal with new situations. The students also achieve new life skills that help them improve their personal development.

FREE GUIDED WALKS

We undertake a wide range of education initiatives as another way to showcase the wonderful temperament and versatility of the  Dartmoor pony and raise awareness of the ponies' vital role in maintaining the ecology of Dartmoor. We offer free guided walks to visit a herd of ponies grazing at Bellever Forest on Dartmoor and see Bronze Age hut circles and other ancient monuments.

DARTMOOR PONY VISITOR & EDUCATION CENTRE AT PARKE ESTATE

We run a bespoke centre open to the public on selected days throughout the year and where we run our equine assisted learning programmes. We have 7 permanent ponies and a number of feral ponies brought in on a regular basis for taming, which are then returned to their respective farms whilst good equine homes are sought for them. We are not a rescue centre we are a conservation organisation committed to the long term survival of the Dartmoor Pony on Dartmoor. The only way of achieving our aim is by working with the Dartmoor farmers who have the grazing rights to the commons of Dartmoor where the ponies have lived for thousands of years. All ponies are owned by farmers and need to be commercially viable to survive into the future.

PROMOTE THE DARTMOOR PONY FOR CONSERVATION GRAZING AND SELL OR LOAN PONIES FOR GRAZING

We liaise with conservation bodies like the National Trust and local Wildlife Trusts to place ponies for conservation grazing. This involves handling the ponies and training the wardens in pony care. We manage a 82-hectare site at Bellever, near Postbridge in the centre of Dartmoor.

DPHT is also an active member of the Pony Action Group, an association of organisations concerned for the welfare and future of the ponies on Dartmoor.
